ISEE and SSAT Test Prep

The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) and the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) are the two most widely used admission tests at private schools in the United States. Many parents choose to send their child to a private or boarding school instead of a public one. These schools can be incredibly selective, so they can use either of these standardized tests during the admissions process. At this point in a student’s life, they have probably never taken a standardized test, so it’s imperative that they be prepped before stepping into the testing room.

Our ISEE/SSAT Test Prep will help students

  • Reinforce their concepts

Why take the ISEE/SSAT

Applying to a private middle school/boarding school: Applying to a private middle school or boarding school can be a daunting process. The Lower/Middle Level ISEE/SSAT may be the first standardized testing experience that an elementary student may have. This is where enrolling in SSAT Prep Classes or an ISEE Prep Course can be extremely beneficial. Standardized testing is unique in that it requires several skills that students do not typically learn in school, such as decision making and pacing. Utilizing these prep courses can ensure your child develops these vital skills and is better prepared for their testing experience.
Applying to a private high school/boarding school: Navigating the journey to the nation’s best private high schools can be an even steeper challenge than college admissions, thus underlining the importance of top-notch ISEE/SSAT scores in a student’s private high school application. The ISEE/SSAT is not merely a test of knowledge, but also a platform to showcase crucial skills such as efficient decision making. To optimally prepare for this, enlisting in the Best SSAT Prep Course or an ISEE Prep program can be instrumental. These courses are designed to equip students with the necessary skills, beyond academic knowledge, to excel in these examinations.

What Our Students Say…

Referred a family friend to Hillview Prep for their SAT prep and they were VERY happy with their results. Ken and his team are very smart and incredibly knowledgable about both the subject matter and the tests themselves. With the highly competitive nature of admissions these days, I would highly suggest working with Hillview to give your children the best opportunity to be accepted in to their top school.

Ken did an amazing job preparing my son for the HSPT. Due to a mistake on our part we didn't reach out to Hillview Prep until a few weeks ahead of the test. Ken was willing to squeeze in the entire course into a few weeks for my son. My son received a great score on the HSPT and was admitted to both Mitty and Bellarmine. I know his test score was a direct result of the tutoring he received at Hillview.

My son attended Hillview Prep to prepare for the HSPT. He has always had some level of test anxiety and even more so with a test as important as the HSPT. Over the course of two weeks and a couple weekends my son gained the knowledge and confidence he needed to take the HSPT and do very well. His prelim assessment test at Hillview Prep set the strategy and schedule for the next 2 two weeks, and they went to work. Over the course of the two weeks Ken was able to teach my son a new way of approaching test taking that reduced his anxiety of running out of time. The result was a huge increase in his math and comprehension scores from where they started, and acceptance into his two top school choices and his back up choice. As a side benefit the techniques Ken taught my son also carried over to regular school work as well. Ken is an exceptional educator and I look forward to working with him again as my son progresses through high school and eventually the PSAT, SAT and ACT. I highly recommend Hillview Prep above any other teaching establishment, their approach to teaching, learning skills, time management and information retention is second to none and their ability to accommodate busy schedules is a blessing. Hillview Prep is the only tutoring service we will use. Ken & his team are excellent tutors. My kids have gone there for help with algebra, chem & biology as well as test prep. They tried two other places before finding Hillview; both were unsatisfactory in different ways. One simply had tutors who could not teach and the other was outrageously overpriced having doubled the price of their services in less than a year.

FAQs

ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) is an examination that most private schools use for the assessment of applicants for admittance. The ERB (Educational Records Bureau) oversees the test for assessing the academic capabilities of students in the elementary, middle, and high school tiers. Since the exam caters to a wide range of students from grades 2 to 12, it is divided into four levels.

  • Grades two till four- Primary level ISEE
  • Grades five and six- Lower Level ISEE
  • Graded seven and eight- Middle-Level ISEE
  • Grades nine till twelve- Upper-Level ISEE
  •

Regardless of the exam level, four competencies, including reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, mathematics achievement, and quantitative reasoning, are assessed- however, the format and difficulty level vary. Moreover, for the upper, middle, and lower level ISEE, the test also comprises an essay question that is not graded but sent to the institution where the student is applying as a writing sample.

SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) is an important part of secondary school application. You may be required to submit your SSAT scores when applying to private schools.

The test, conducted by the EMA, is standardized and assesses for key competencies, including Math I and II, reading comprehension, and verbal reasoning. It also includes an experimental section that is ungraded and includes new questions.

Like ISEE, there is an essay as well, but it is applicable to all levels, including elementary for grades three and four, middle level for grades five to seven, and upper level for grades eight to eleven. Moreover, the students are assessed for the grades they are in and not the grades they will be entering and are graded against the average score of the students who took the exam during the last three years. It is also important to note that private schools consider other criteria for admissions besides the SSAT scores as well.

It is important to keep in mind that SSAT is generally more difficult than the average school exams. Students may encounter questions that are difficult to solve. It is because regular school studies may not prepare them well for taking the standardized test. So, to do well, students need to prepare properly. The good news is that we at Hillview Prep offer the best SSAT prep course that will not only help you prepare for the exam but will also give you the confidence to do well on the test.

Usually, it is advised to spare at least four to six months, but it is better to start preparing at least eight months before. It is because starting early will give the student more time to prepare for complex material and test-taking strategies.

Moreover, the added duration will give them more time to familiarize themselves with the test material and format, which may help ease exam anxiety. At Hillview Prep, we equip them with adequate preparation and skills that will benefit them more. We make them take an extensive practice test that serves as the starting point for the preparation. The preparation period may vary depending on their test scores, as a lower initial score will mean more time is required to prepare.

That said, there is no better time now. Register with us for SSAT prep near you today.

One way to go about this is to take a free test online to get a baseline score. It must be treated as a real test so students have a starting point and know their weak areas. At Hillview, we offer a practice test that helps determine the baseline and enables us to identify topics or areas students need more help with so we can focus more on those. A student having an average baseline score may need six to eight months of preparation and can register for our ISEE prep course online. The test may be difficult as it includes materials from higher levels. Hence, it is important to consider the baseline to determine an adequate preparation time.

The answer to this question would depend on the student’s preference, the school requirement for which they are seeking admission, and their aptitude. Please note of all the factors, the school requirements must take precedence and hence the key determinant of which exam type must be considered. While most schools will accept either of the two, it is still advised to confirm with the respective school before finalizing the decision.

If the school does not have a preference, it is important to understand their difference and then decide. For instance, a student with an inclination toward math may do better at ISEE. On the other hand, if writing or verbal skills are their forte, then SSAT may be a better choice. The SSAT’s verbal section is tougher, and in the case of math, ISEE is more difficult. Our SSAT and ISEE prep classes are designed to help you master all components effectively.
