Taking an AP Subject Test is a big commitment to make. Spending a year learning the material, then taking several hours to complete such a test puts a lot on any student. The costs, however, do not outweigh the benefits. Not only do these tests help with college enrollment, they can also be used as college credit for many institutions in the U.S.. While AP tests are expensive, they can potentially shorten a student’s stay in a university, making the savings on tuition enormous. AP courses also provide very valuable experiences for someone not accustomed to college curriculum and rigor.
AP English Language
AP English is divided into two courses: AP English Language and AP English Literature. AP Lang focuses a lot more on composition and argumentation strategies, while AP Lit is very focused on text analysis. While the former is detail-oriented, the latter focuses more seriously on the big picture. AP English Language is often the hardest English course to master, as it is a big leap from high-school level writing to college-level writing, of not just structuring your argument well, but being able to use rhetorical devices in your essay writing to aid in your argument. AP English Literature requires a lot of attention and good analysis of setting, character and story, something very much needed in college-level literary analysis. At Hillview Prep, our tutors will help you master the necessary skills for both of these courses and prepare you for the rigorous journey of college-level writing.
AP Physics
The AP Physics course is divided into three subcategories: AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2, which are both algebra-based, and AP Physics C, which relies heavily on calculus. All three of these categories are college-level courses, and as such, are difficult to master, since they are a step above the high-school level physics courses students at that level are used to taking. Extremely concept-heavy, AP Physics relies on a deeper understanding of the material, and does not work well with memorization. At Hillview Prep, we will guide you toward a deeper understanding of these physics courses and help you create a good foundation for your future college studies.
AP Calculus
AP Calculus is divided into two subcategories: AB and BC. While AP Calculus AB works as an introduction to basic calculus concepts, BC dives deeper into its workings and application in the real world. Both are challenging in their own way, and both are very big leaps from the mathematics the student is familiar with. Our tutors will help you parse the complicated content and understand the concepts, while honing your skills at problem-solving and the study-skills needed to pass this course.
