Challenges in Science
Science can be a tricky subject to master. It utilizes mathematics, problem solving and conceptual understanding, and can be exciting as much as it can be terrifying. While the most typical place to learn science is in the classroom, often times that setting and the resources offered at your school simply aren’t enough. Here at Hillview Prep, we will help you master your middle school and high school science courses, from Biology, to Chemistry, to Physics, and help you succeed in your science studies, all while mastering important study skills.
Biology
What is a mitochondria? The powerhouse of the cell, a fact that has plagued biology students for generations. Biology is typically very concept-heavy. It requires the ability to retain and categorize the information given, creating complex systems of association in order to understand and retain the necessary facts. From anatomy to cellular systems, at Hillview Prep, we’ll help you develop the skills needed to keep track of important concepts, memorize terms and associations, and know the typical testing procedures most schools utilize for their biology course.
Chemistry
Chemistry is a very math-heavy subject. Not only does a student need to memorize formulas and understand concepts, but they also need to know how to manipulate them in a problem-solving manner. It’s very easy to get lost in the mathematics side of the subject, and easier still to prioritize that and neglect the conceptual side. Our courses will help locate which aspects of chemistry you are confident in, and which aspects cause you to struggle.
Physics
While it is another math-heavy science, physics requires quite a lot more conceptual understanding than chemistry or biology ever did. Middle school physics courses typically start with Newton’s Laws, breaking down how they relate to the real world, while high school physics courses are much more abstract. If you plan to take AP Physics, the combination of science concepts and calculus is very challenging. Often, students have a tough time parsing out how each law matters and end up relying heavily on memorization, which can hinder learning and understanding. Here at Hillview Prep, we emphasize deeper understanding over memorization, and seek to use physics as a tool to hone a much larger skill – problem solving.
